Michael Zavros: Drowned Mercedes
Drowned Mercedes 2023 is a 1996 convertible Mercedes Benz SL filled with water
Created in 2023, based on an existing 1996 Mercedes Benz SL, the open top car was customised to hold water in its cabin.
It was first exhibited at QAGOMA as part of Zavros's solo retrospective exhibition The Favourite.
The car is a replica of one given to the artist by his early art dealer, Gold Coaster Win Schubert and connects with themes of luxury, consumerism, narcissism and a migrant materialism consistent in his practice.
Also consistent with past works, the car exists as a folly, a contemporary ruin.
