Contours - Abstract Landscape Paintings from Central Australia

Mitchell Fine Art in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley presents a group exhibition of paintings illuminating the deep layers of ancestral connection between First Nations artists and their traditional homelands, showing from 23 September 2025.

Contours is a powerful exhibition of contemporary Aboriginal artworks from Central Australia. The exhibition delves further than merely Western notions of topography and geography, offering a profound reinterpretation of the landscape and its enduring spiritual, cultural, and ancestral significance to First Nations people.

Artists from Australia's Central Desert regions have employed vibrant colours, symbolic iconography, and a variety of painting techniques to depict sites of significance and important cultural stories.

These works invite viewers to see Country not as a passive backdrop, but as a living presence imbued with ancestral authority; tracing the emotional, cultural, and spiritual contours of place, as well as the unseen pathways of ancestral journeys and traditional knowledge systems that continue to guide traditional life.

Contours showcases some of the most celebrated First Nations artists including Eileen Napaltjarri, George Hairbrush Tjungurrayi, George Ward Tjungurrayi, Kudditji Kngwarreye, Makinti Napanangka, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Walangkura Napanangka and Willy Tjungurrayi.

At its core, Contours challenges colonial cartographies and asserts Indigenous ways of seeing, understanding and interpreting the land.

The exhibition is showing at Mitchell Fine Art, 86 Arthur Street in Fortitude Valley from 23rd September - 18th October 2025.
